Blog Graphics Best Practices for Pinterest


Regardless of the type of blogger you are, Pinterest is your best friend, or wanna-be best friend, depending on your relationship. If you do it right, it can be by far the most successful social media platform for you to generate new readers to your site.

Unfortunately, most people are not creating blog Pinterest graphics that work for their brand and see success on Pinterest. This topic is one of the areas of blogging that has a lot of wrong info out there.

How to Properly Pin Blog Images on Pinterest

Blog Content Should Always Be Evergreen

Too many bloggers get in the habit of sharing details about events, promos, and sales on their blog. It ends up occupying about 50% of their total content. Unfortunately, this content is only relevant for a short duration (a weekend or a few weeks). These posts are better suited for platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and even a dedicated email blast.

Your blog content should always be available and relevant to your potential readers. Whether it was something published six months ago or something posted a yesterday, your readers should find long-term benefits from each published article!

Vertical: Not Just for Pinterest, but Also for Mobile

It’s no secret that vertical images perform better on Pinterest than square or horizontal images. Vertical images also present better on different mobile devices like iPhones and iPads. When creating vertical graphics or photographs, always stick to the same ratio. I recommend using either a 4:5, 2:3, or 9:16 ratio for your graphics. If you shoot your photographs vertical, use the 2:3 aspect ratio that most crop sensor and full-frame cameras have. You won’t need to crop your images to another ratio!

Easy Text

Any text that you include on a blog post graphic must be readable. Depending on your niche, there are different rules you should follow. If you are an infopreneur, large, easy-to-read text performs better. Readers searching for infopreneur articles are looking for the message and not necessarily image quality. If you are a lifestyle blogger (food and fashion), then your photographs play the biggest role in your graphics. Text should not take away from the recipe or style post.

Not All of Your Images Need to Be Branded

Image after image with a promo, or repeat content, exhausts the reader. Remember, your photographs need to work in the post, then stand alone on social media. Determining a clear photography style will guide you to include both on-brand visuals.

Don’t Hide Your Images

Whatever idiot came up with this recommendation about hiding your images, doesn’t know the basics of SEO. Google and other search engines do not like hidden content; they view it as spammy and interpret it as hindering the accessibility of the page content. If you are hiding your Pinterest graphics, stop. It’s hurting your more than it’s helping you.

Instead, your blog post graphics should work seamlessly with your content. Include one on-brand, Pinterest-friendly image in your post. If you follow my do’s and dont’s of blog post templates, the graphic works seamlessly into your post.

Include On-Brand Elements Always

The colors and fonts used in your templates should match your brand and not the content of the graphics. Use the same fonts and colors of your blog design.  Try to replicate the spacing as well. Bloggers tend to crush too much into a collage.

Always include either your website URL or name on the photograph or template. It doesn’t need to be big. You should use the same treatment each time – location and style.

Save Images Properly

I’ve written extensively on how to save your images properly for the web, but it always warrants being reiterated! When you save your images, make sure that you are exporting them with a keyword rich file name, such as “fall-midi-skirt.jpg” instead of “DSC-1011.jpg”.  This practice helps for both SEO and Pinterest.

Once you enter the photos into the post, enter the Alt Titles and Title Text. When you or someone pins the images, it will pull this text. Alt Titles and Title Text should very accurately describe the picture.

Always Use a Pin Scheduler

Once your post is live, pin your content. I’m always surprised by how many bloggers do not do this! If you don’t pin your content, how can you expect your readers?

Pinning your content is only as effective as the scheduler you use. I preferred tool is Tailwind. Add pins to my queue, it sends them out at the optimal time for engagement. I started using Tailwind in October 2015 with little over 800 followers. In almost a year and half of use, it has grown to 1175% to over 9400 followers.
