Staying Productive While Working From Home


Working from home can seem like a dream – the ease of setting your schedule, being your boss, and the comfort of your home! Once I started working from home, I realized that I had a case of the grass is greener on the other side. I would struggle to get everything done and stay focused on tasks, and I got a little lonely. I realized what I needed to do to make my home office work for me, and ever since, I’ve loved working from home.

Tips for Staying Sane While You Work From Home

Set A Clear Space for Working

I complete all my computer work at my desk. I never take my computer to the couch or the bed. When I’m at my desk, it is work time. I know as soon as I sit down, it’s time to get busy. By designating this area for work, I’m also able to enjoy the other parts of my house for relaxation, and I do not feel like work is all around me. It’s just right at my desk.

Determine Set Hours

When I first started working for myself, I would make plans to meet with friends, go to events, network, etc. I chose to give others priority over my schedule, instead of myself. Thus, I started setting hours. I typically try to do any meetings on Tuesdays or Thursdays (those tend to be slow days for me). I also start working at 10 am and don’t finish until 8 pm or 9 pm. I take an hour break at 12:30 and another hour break around 4. I find that I’m much more productive in the afternoons. So I do a bulk of my client work from 1-8pm.

Batch Scheduling Will Change Your Life

Before I opened the blog shop, I would just do client work (all day long). However, with the increase in blog shop sales and consulting projects, I’ve had to build in time to address those tasks. When making my schedule for the week and day, I’ve found that I can only complete two custom client work tasks at a day (and I do one build on one day). By batch scheduling when I do client work, blog shop sales, and consulting projects, I’ve taken the guessing work out of when I will do something. Things just get filled into slots as they come in.

Clean Workspace with Only What You Need

If you follow me on Instagram, you will see a lot of snapshots from my day. Keeping my desk and office space clean and tidy, helps me focus on designing and work. Organization also extends virtually to my computer. I keep all my projects organized by type and client. Things are grouped and arranged where the things I use the most are easily accessible.

Listen to Yourself

If I need a break or more time with something, I give it to myself. I’ve found that trying to “fight” those desires is so counter productive. In fact, stepping away for a quick walk and change of scenery is all I need to come back to my desk refreshed and motivated.

Listening to yourself is the biggest key. What someone else does for their business might not be the best for you (i.e. especially with scheduling). At first, I struggled to work on a schedule that was 9-5pm. When I realized that 9-5pm wasn’t for me, I made the adjustments with keeping my business values and operating my business as efficiently as possible.
