As a freelancer, you do everything in your power to make sure that your career survives. Responding to emails late at night, working weekends, putting in that extra round to benefit a client relationship. Anything to keep your business going.
If you are like most freelancers, you can’t endure this pace forever, and you soon realize that taking care of your business also means taking care of you. Creating a work/life balance that allows you to recharge, to bring energy to every task.
When I was going 24-7, seven days a week, I burned out. I felt emotionally and creatively drained. Things that wouldn’t typically stress me out stressed me out. So, I made a change. I am currently working 9-5:30 each day, Monday-Friday. I have a little routine on the weekends, but I consider that more a part of self-care than work. Honestly, getting a hold of how I manage projects has been the biggest thing to help me stay balanced.

4-Hour Workweek and Essentialism are my two favorite books on adding self-care as a freelancer. While they don’t give steps or recommendations, they focus broadly on the idea that to be more balanced; it comes down to our choices and points of focus!
