The Recipe Critic is a top food blog featuring wholesome, family-friendly recipes created by founder Alyssa Rivers and her team of contributors. The blog features recipes, recipe roundups, and a weekly meal plan exclusively.
Optimization and Organization
After five years of successful blogging, Alyssa needed to clean-up her content on a post-by-post basis and its overall organization. In her site audit, I strategized an approach to present her recipes that would align with her overall brand goals. The blog cleanup included streamlining users, importing external images, setting up SSL, and fixing broken links. Readers can filter through recipes based on the type of meal, ingredient, dietary, and holiday.
The Recipe Critic’s success over the years is mainly due to Alyssa’s influence. When determining her fonts and colors, I relied solely on her personal preferences. I kept her signature pink (updated) and updated her fork and spoon icon. Neutral colors and clean typography highlight the beautiful photography and reiterate the ease of her recipes.
Blog Design & Development
The blog design had the following objectives:
- Curated home page with easily changeable content depending on the season, week, etc.
- Improve readability of individual post pages
- Encourage readers to navigation through category templates and recipe box
With her custom design, Alyssa can easily add posts to the above the post featured area. She can customize what it says (i.e. “reader favorites”), groupings (i.e. “summer favorites”), and what specific posts show up. The chronological display of recent posts maintain the blog nature of her site and encourage readers to scan previous pages with numbered pagination. A call-out to her e-commerce shop is completely customizable. Finally, the “effortless delights” section at the end of her blog page is customizable like the above-the-fold section.
